DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the lectures is to give an introduction to
the hypoelliptic Laplacian and to the results which have been obtained
so far by this method.\n\nThe hypoelliptic Laplacian gives a universa
l interpolation between the Laplacian and the generator of the geodesi
c flow through a family of hypoelliptic operators acting on a bigger s
pace than the original Laplacian. There are as many hypoelliptic Lapla
cians as there are Laplacians.\n\nTo this deformation of operators cor
responds an interpolation of dynamics\, that interpolates between Brow
nian motion\, with the most irregular paths possible\, and the geodesi
cs which have the most regular trajectories.\n\nExplicit geometric for
mulas for certain orbital integrals will appear as consequences. These
give in arbitrary dimensions the analogues of the geometric formula o
btained by Selberg in the case of Riemann surfaces.\n\nThe lectures ar
e given by Jean-Michel Bismut. Additionally\, he will give a Colloqui
um talk for the general audience.
