Alexander Rahm will give a series of four talks on discrete groups and
torsion subcomplexes. Torsion subcomplexes are a method to understand
the torsion in the homology of groups. In the case of Bianchi groups,
i.e. PSL_2 over imaginary number rings, one can establish a close
connection between the geometry of the group acting on hyperbolic
3-space and the arithmetic of the underlying number ring. The lecture
series will explain the background and applications of torsion
subcomplexes.
